Smithfield, meaning "Farm Market" is an area on the north side of Dublin. Its focal point is a public square, formerly an open market, now officially called Smithfield Plaza, but known locally as Smithfield Square or Smithfield Market.
Notable landmarks include the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery and the Observation Tower
Smithfield is one of the most historic areas in Dublin city. Horse and Cattle trading have taken place here since 1664.
Smithfield village has been developed into a sophisticated residential, commercial and cultural district, and also a contemporary cultural landscape, a village within the city.
The cobbles public space hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year such a seasonal markets, a Christmas season ice-rink and concerts.
he Smithfield area is also home to the Dublin City Fruit Vegetable and Flower Market. The Council recently demolished the adjacent Fish Market building and plan to redevelop the rest of the site.
Smithfield's iconic tower, and its observation deck, is no longer accessible to the public, as it has long-since been closed due to health and safety concerns. Today, the tower's exterior - which is loosely clad in sagging, protective green safety nets - acts as a highly-visible marker for the area's continuing and unexpected decline in fortunes.

This was my second visit to Trinity Capital and thoroughly enjoyed my stay once again. We arrived for our stay for my 40th birthday with my husband and was greeted in my room to a birthday card and box of sweets and then also realised that they had kindly upgraded us to an Executive Room. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the atmosphere in the hotel was as wonderful as ever - the location is only a short walk from Temple Bar and Grafton Street, which is great. Hopefully before too long I shall be back to Trinity Capital for my third stay and I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Dublin.
